Sketch-Based 3D Design

"It's easy, it's fast and it's fun."
Steve Montgomery, AIA (30 years architectural experience, no computer experience other than SketchUp)

"We have realized huge time savings using SketchUp."
Andy Wisnoski, Bill Poss & Associates, Aspen, CO

"SketchUp is the finest (and most innovative) tool available for anyone designing anything from coffeepots to skyscrapers."
Lacy McCall, McCall & Associates

"I'm really becoming excited about the design process again..."
Kevin Palmer AIA, James W. Buckley Associates, Swainsboro, GA

SketchUp is a real gem in the CAD industry for 3D visual thinking."
Marek Solarz, studio MS

"We absolutely love SketchUp in our office....I've been using 3d programs of one flavor or another for 15 years and this is by far the best one yet - a simple tool that can be used for complex drawings...not an easy achievement!"
Andrew Deschenes, ganek|baer architects inc

"To repeat the point one final time: anyone who designs buildings, whether from the inside, the outside or in town- or campus-sized bunches, should own and use a copy of Sketchup and a copy of Piranesi."
Jerry Laiserin, http://www.laiserin.com/

"SketchUp is a delightful new 3D modeling tool that is easy to use and a lot of fun."
Lachmi Khemlani, CADence

"SketchUp could be the conceptual design solution you’ve been waiting for all these years."
Greg Corke, www.cadserver.co.uk

"I use SketchUp in the early stages of a project to begin studying the impact of form and massing. The basic "bubble" diagram is formed in SU, using shapes in 2D initially. After developing a layout, I use the push/pull to begin shaping the spaces and form of the building.

After making general decisions on massing and form, I then begin to mould the building, adding fenestrations, then color, and finally some materials to generate a very "true" picture of the building. This not only allows me to see details and even identify difficult detailing areas, but I can show the client and receive a very clear direction on approvals.

I then take the information and use ArchiCAD to develop the full simulation and generate documentation for construction in ArchiCAD, including standard sections, details, but also isometric views and 3d images to allow clarity of purpose and intent.

It works amazing well! SketchUp has greatly improved my process flow and design capabilities by allowing me to quickly study many variations that was, until now, nearly impossible with given budgets and time."

Audie Bates, OneSphere

"My compliments on the super-fast and super-thorough responses. You guys are really on the ball. A welcome change in dealing with software companies."
Carl Schwartz, Architectural Design Group

"To the Folks at Sketchup, Fantastic product! You were featured a couple of times in Cadalyst and I decided to check your software out a couple of days ago. The "try and buy" option is a great deal. I had just started another 3D Viz model and decided it was still early enough to see how sketchup would work for this small project. At first I thought, ONLY 8 hours? To learn the software and come up with something to present to the client? Seemed like a bit of a tall order but after I got started ( I did watch the tutorial videos) my 3D model shaped up pretty quickly. I spent several hours on this as I was constantly getting input from others as they marveled at how easy it was to move things around, but I did manage to finish a rudimentary model pretty quickly, export a few jpg's and voila! I realize this is a very simple model but I think I did pretty well for a first effort :) I hope to purchase Sketchup as soon as our principal architects see the output!"
John de Padua, Furr & Wegman Architects, Lakeland, FL

"Sketchup astounded me with the easy way you can quickly pull, prod and stretch a few simple lines into an impressive piece of work. If SketchUp were a small furry animal I couldn't love it more!"
Ron Williams, Sydney, Australia

"I've found that SketchUp is a great tool for quick and thorough concept design. I have tried it out with everything from housing development, concept design, and even a walkthrough of a designjet! I have had such a blast using it! I don't profess to be a quick learner when it comes to software, but Skethcup makes you feel like a pro in about 5 minutes!"
Sam Swenson, Hewlett-Packard

"I am an Architectural Technician who has used various CAD & CAD-related packages over the past 15 years. Having had a look at Sketchup, I can safely say that I have never come across a more user-friendly, incredibly simple interface coupled to such a powerful piece of software...It's a designer's dream!"
David Gough, Architectural Technician, UK

"Brad, I would like to add some British compliments to your growing collection. Its strange, but good things do come out of bad. On September 11 2001 I was preparing to come back to London via LAX when the awful news of the attack on the twin towers became clear. The shut down on travel meant that I was stuck in our Newport Beach office for 5 days. ( We are WATG a design firm that specializes in Hotels, Tourism and Entertainment projects.)

Well, after doing the emails I found that I had very little to do and a lot of hours available, so I decided to teach myself some new software. Our Jim Balding is a strong disciple of Revit and gave me the intro discs to try out. "While you are at it" he said "have a look at this incredible programme called SketchUp" I am afraid that Revit didn't get much of a look in. I must add that I am a post retiree Architect who started with AutoCad in 1983 and have been hooked on the benefits of electronic design tools ever since. Eleven years ago I came across the UpFront programme mentioned in your March newsletter and could not believe my luck. Lee Anderson is absolutely right, if only the hardware had been around.

So, suddenly finding SketchUp during the dark days of September 2001 was mind blowing. At WATG London we use it all the time and I have a team of at least 10 who are equally in love with it. What occurred to me yesterday was the way in which the team are using three different programmes simultaneously to develop our latest project in Dubai. SketchUp, AutoCad and Photoshop. Clients find it really hard to read the .dwg drawings but are really comfortable with their transmutation into SketchUp 3Ds. Add some Photoshop enhancement and a design sketch is a construction plan is a presentation tool.

Incredible. Just in a year and a half It has saved us thousands of hours and transformed the way we work. Congratulations on the best design tool ever."
